Who I am

Hi, my name is Jorrit (pronounced your-it, like you just tagged someone). Anyway. Welcome to my space!

A central hub to share my favourite photos... that idea had been popping up more regularly in my mind. So, voila! Even though I haven’t been photographing wildlife for too long (let’s say 4 years, properly), I still tend to get lost in all my folders, and I’m happy to see everything come together in ordered galleries here.

I’m Dutch, and I’m happy to live in a country known as a hub for bird migration. However, I wasn’t aware of most of the incredible species our country calls home until 2020, when an internship with captive rose-breasted cockatoos ignited the ‘bird spark’ within me. Since then, I’ve not stopped photographing local wild birds. More recently, I’ve been expanding my horizons, traveling to other (mostly chillier) places. I prefer to photograph smaller birds, and I love focusing on species that live in inhospitable places or face great challenges as they go about their lives. I’m also proud to be a frequent author at natuurfotografie.nl, the primary hub for nature photography in the Netherlands, where I write columns, Wikis about species, and photography tutorials.

My style is hard to define - for myself, that is! I generally prefer brighter, high-key photos with some negative space. Portraits have been most alluring in the past, but I now prefer including more hints of the habitat. Still, I want - need- to explore my photography in so many ways! From slow-shutter flight shots to amplifying textures and shapes with black and white, to multiple exposure, and even some macro stuff. No, I’m not done learning yet. Luckily, I’ve got some exciting trips coming up :-)

I thank you for visiting my photography hub! Please check out my galleries, projects, and thoughts for my favourite photos and personal stories. I hope you read my statement on ethics first.
